Half Marathon

August 31, 2009

Saturday I enjoyed watching my daughter run a half marathon, her first official race. She made a spur of the moment decision to run in it while she was with her roommate who was signing up for the race. She was feeling some regret about her decision since she hadn’t been able to find the time to train because of the demands of being back in school while continuing to work twenty-seven hours a week.

She determined to go ahead and run the race despite her lack of preparation. Considering she had never run more than nine miles before the day of the race, she did remarkable running 11.5 minute miles. It must be all those exercise videos she has diligently done for the past fifteen years.

She said she enjoyed running the first nine miles listening to her IPod playlist while relishing a gorgeous early morning with next to perfect running temperatures. The last four miles were difficult because she became light-headed and weak. The thing that re-energized her was the cheering from onlookers along the race path and listening to upbeat music.

It was an especially neat and inspiring experience for me to cheer in my loudest voice for my daughter, the elderly, and the handicapped.

Children with Severe Allergies

August 25, 2009

This weekend I read about a little girl named Sophie that was born with severe allergies to peanut butter, milk, eggs, wheat, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. I have always been of the opinion that allergies are developed over time, but Sophie’s case discounts that theory.

Out of necessity, Sophie’s mother, Emily, started modifying and making up recipes that Sophie could eat. When Emily met other children with allergies who ate only a few foods because their parents didn’t know there were other choices, she would share her recipes with them. She later decided to publish a cookbook titled Sophie-Safe Cooking.

Boating and Water Skiing

August 13, 2009

Our son, Ben, and his little family came from Washington D.C. to visit us this past week. It has been seven months since we have seen them so it has been a ball to watch all the new things Hallie (almost one-year old) has learned to do in the past months. The day after they arrived, Brittany’s family, the Romrells were nice enough to invite our family to spend an afternoon boating and water skiing. Hallie didn’t like her life jacket or the cold water, but she liked riding in the boat. The lake conditions were perfect: not many boaters around and the water was very smooth and calm. Thanks so much to the Romrells for a fun afternoon of boating.

Ancestor’s Pioneer Story

July 25, 2009

We celebrated Pioneer Day yesterday, a Utah state holiday. I would like to share one of my favorite pioneer stories from my ancestors.

In 1842, John W. Berry, my 2nd great grandfather, walked 20 miles to hear the gospel message. He was so impressed with the new religion that he asked the elders to come to his father’s home to tell the wonderful message to his family. All the family joined the church but one sister who was bitter against the new message. Soon after accepting the gospel the family made preparations to move from Tennessee to Nauvoo. They arrived three weeks after the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith.

I Bet You Didn’t Know Coca-Cola Did This

June 26, 2009

I don’t know if all of these work, but I thought they were interesting enough to try.

1. Clean a toilet bowl. Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl. Let the real thing sit for one hour, then brush and flush clean. The phosphoric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china, according to household-hints columnist Heloise.

2. Remove rust spots from chrome care bumpers. Rubbing the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola will help remove rust spots, according to household hits columnist Mary Ellen.

3. Loosen a rusted bolt. Mary Ellen suggests applying a cloth soaked in a carbonated soda to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

Swine Flu

June 16, 2009

The swine flu made it’s way to our neighborhood. A 15-year-old neighbor girl attended an “Especially For Youth” event where kids gather from many different places to attend youth classes; she contracted the virus there. It is moving fast, but seems to be a mild flu so I don’t think there is need to be overly concerned.
