Tyler, my 15-year-old son, has been taking piano lessons for about a year and a half. Since he is an older beginning piano student, he made me promise him if he took piano lessons that I wouldn’t let his piano teacher force him to play little kiddie songs in front of people at the piano recitals. So I made sure when I signed him up that the teacher knew about our deal, and she didn’t have any problem with our agreement.
I was very pleased and surprised when he decided to go ahead and participate in the recitals. Since he has progressed quickly, he felt comfortable enough to play in front of an audience. He played a couple of Christmas songs at the Christmas recital and he again consented to play at the end-of-the-school year recital. It pleased me that he was brave enough to participate, and by the way, he did a great job. He even bowed to the crowd when he completed his songs.
